Coinage struck at the American mints of the Spanish Empire: from cut, hammer-struck cob coins (macuquinas) to round pieces produced with screw presses.
The Casa de Moneda de Santa Fe was authorized by Felipe III in 1620 and began striking in 1622, including the first gold coins made in the Americas. After passing under direct Crown control and expanding its building, from 1757 it used rolling mills and screw presses.
