The Ecuadorian Sucre
The sucre, named for Marshal Antonio José de Sucre, a hero of South American independence, replaced the Ecuadorian peso as the national currency in 1884. The Central Bank of Ecuador, created in 1927, centralized the issue of paper money that until then regional private banks had produced, consolidating a unified monetary system that would last more than a century.
The severe financial crisis of the late 1990s caused an uncontrolled devaluation of the sucre, leading President Jamil Mahuad’s government to decree the official dollarization of the Ecuadorian economy in 2000, ending 116 years of national monetary history.
