Historical and Issue Context

Identification: United States — Magna/Giori press test note — Lincoln Memorial (composite back) — grass green — uniface — Rothberg RGMB1/0NSU. The code is transcribed from the specimen filename, not from Friedberg.

The type: in the mid-twentieth century Gualtiero Giori developed multi-colour intaglio presses. The BEP ordered trials; 2012 Ontario County Historical Society notes (reprinted in The E-Sylum) place Geneva, N.Y. trials with American Can Company / Edgar L. Pigman. This sheet is not assigned to that hoard.1,2

Not to be confused with: the Giori note with cancelled Lincoln, Washington, and Grant portraits, or an issued $5 Federal Reserve Note. More context in the United States catalog.

Key Details Visible on the Note

  • Printed side: Lincoln Memorial at centre; “THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” below; “WASHINGTON, D.C.” at right; linear frame; blocks and “ONE” fragments in the corners — a plate collage, not an issued $5 reverse.
  • Colour: a single grass-green ink in this photo.
  • Reverse: blank (uniface).
  • Serials: none. No Treasury seal or signatures.
