Historical and Issue Context

The first years of the Republic:These banknotes were issued in 1882, in the years after the dissolution of Gran Colombia, when the country was still seeking to consolidate a unified national monetary system. They represent one of the first attempts at republican paper money in circulation in Colombia, before the centralization that the National Bank would later bring.

Fractional values for everyday commerce:The low denominations of One Peso and Two Pesos, issued as part of the same series, responded to the chronic shortage of fractional metallic currency and facilitated daily transactions of the time.

Testimony to state-building:These banknotes are direct testimonies of the process of institutional and monetary construction of the young Republic of Colombia during the 19th century.

Key Details Visible on Banknotes

  • Obverse:shield of the Republic in the center with the flag and allegorical elements, headed by “Bolivar Republic of Colombia” and the payment formula “Upon presentation the Amount of…”, with the denomination repeated in the corners and side bands.
  • Reverse:repeats the obverse design in reverse (mirrored) transparency, a printing technique typical of 19th-century paper money intended to deter counterfeiting.
  • Handwritten signatures and numbering:Both bills retain space for handwritten signatures and individual numbering, practices typical of banking and government issuance of the time.
